Northeast Kansas Animal Welfare Foundation has partnered with Home To Home® to help families with pets in our area. This interactive tool will give pet owners who can no longer keep their pets the opportunity to find new, loving homes without having to surrender them to the shelter. Pets can go from one home right into another, which means less stress for animals and humans alike. In addition, this offers potential new owners the opportunity to communicate directly with the current owners, providing firsthand information about the animals.
In addition to rehoming, the Home To Home® foster network directly connects pet owners who are seeking temporary housing for their pet with individuals who can open up their homes and hearts to provide short-term care until the pet can be reunited with its family.
You know your pet better than anybody. You can provide a rehoming experience for them that is less stressful than a shelter. You can also find a temporary home to foster your pet.
Search for adoptable pets, farm animals, and more near you. These animals come with a free vet exam, 30 days of pet insurance, 1:1 access to a trainer, and more.
Animals are in need of foster homes right now. Circumstances vary, but pets in need of a foster may include those from military bases or individuals in need of extended medical care.
Northeast Kansas Animal Welfare Foundation is a funding organizaion which supports the work of animal shelters and rescues. We are not an organization that takes in animals or adopts them out. Since we work with so many organizations, we are able to help locate a resource near you. Reach out if we can be of assistance.
No, we are not an animal adoption agency. We support licensed nonprofit animal shelters and rescues. We also sponsor Clear the Shelter with KSNT. Any adoption events hosted by NKAWF are done so in partnership with an organization that has animals available for adoption.
Animal shelters across the country are experiencing a high volume of homeless pets needing refuge. Unfortunately there isn't enough space for all of the animals. Many shelters have moved to a "managed intake" model which means you might not be able to drop off an animal or you may need to make an appointment to surrender an animal. Sometimes this can take days, weeks, or even months. We encourage you to visit with shetler directors and their board members about their specific policies.
In many places there is no form of animal control or animal shelter to handle stray and unwanted pets. You will want to contact local elected officials such as City Council members and County Commissioners to discuss this problem.
Animal Control is always the best bet for any calls about animals. Other options are law enforcement or a local animal shelter. Use caution when approaching animals that are not familiar with you. Check neighborhood social media groups on places like Facebook and Nextdoor.
